NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), and naproxen (Aleve or Naprosyn) can be metabolized differently depending on genetics. Learn whether you carry genetic markers associated with NSAID sensitivity.

NSAID Sensitivity Report

Learn whether you have a genetic risk for NSAID sensitivity

Histamine is normally broken down by an enzyme called diamine oxidase (DAO), encoded by the AOC1 gene. There are several important SNPs in this gene, but we evaluate rs10156191 for NSAID sensitivity. This SNP is associated with lower DAO levels. Since NSAID drugs further lower DAO, those with variants in rs10156191 tend to have sensitivity to drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen. There are also two SNPs in CYP genes, rs1799853, and rs10509681, which also regulate your response to NSAIDs, with those carrying risk alleles being at heightened risk of intestinal bleeding. The Gene Food NSAID Sensitivity Report evaluates SNPs associated with NSAID sensitivity so you know your status.

Carbs are GOOD
★★★★★

“Once I went back to carbs (based on the Okinawa diet) and quit the whole 30/paleo diet as well as any attempts at Keto or low-carb, my weight stopped rising, and actually started to go down (and I didn’t even follow the Okinawa diet very strictly, and did no caloric restriction)!”

Best health decision of my adult life
★★★★★

“Acquiring a custom nutrition plan from Gene Food was the single best health decision of my adult life. I frequent the Gene Food blog & the Gene Food podcast. John O’Connor and Dr. Aaron Gardner are focused on providing individuals with the very best science based information today. I believe their individualized approach, not the “one size fits all” seen frequently, is the future of optimizing health and wellness.”

Find out how your body actually handles carbs

Low-carb works for some people and backfires for others. In the PREDICT-1 trial, genetics accounted for nearly half of the variation in how much blood sugar rose two hours after a meal. Our CLIA-certified test scores your carbohydrate response across multiple validated SNPs, matches you to one of 20 diet types, and turns it into a plan: the carbs that suit you, the ones to limit, and a two-week meal plan built around them.

Frequently asked questions

Unfortunately, there is a dearth of biomarkers to diagnose NSAID sensitivity, and skin prick tests are ineffective. As such, genetic testing is a strong yet incomplete way to determine a possible sensitivity to NSAID medications.

This report is available with the Methylation Bundle (Health Intelligence), alongside the core reports included with your Gene Food DNA test. Current bundle pricing is shown above.

Like all our tests, the NSAID Sensitivity Report is a simple cheek swab test. The test kit includes a self-addressed return envelope and detailed instructions for taking it. The swab sample is sent to our CLIA-certified laboratory in Houston, where the sequencing occurs.
