MTHFR and folate metabolism report

Learn whether you carry genetic markers associated with lower MTHFR activity

MTHFR is an enzyme that is encoded by the MTHFR gene and functions to convert 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate (MeTHF) to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (MTHF). Proper MTHFR activity is fundamental to overall good health, as it is responsible for metabolizing dietary folate and folic acid into a variety of other products vital to the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and other amino acids. The Gene Food MTHFR test provides status and analysis for the two most common MTHFR SNPs, rs1801133 and rs1801131, so consumers can learn their status for this pathway, which plays a key role in methylation.

Carbs are GOOD
★★★★★

“Once I went back to carbs (based on the Okinawa diet) and quit the whole 30/paleo diet as well as any attempts at Keto or low-carb, my weight stopped rising, and actually started to go down (and I didn’t even follow the Okinawa diet very strictly, and did no caloric restriction)!”

Best health decision of my adult life
★★★★★

“Acquiring a custom nutrition plan from Gene Food was the single best health decision of my adult life. I frequent the Gene Food blog & the Gene Food podcast. John O’Connor and Dr. Aaron Gardner are focused on providing individuals with the very best science based information today. I believe their individualized approach, not the “one size fits all” seen frequently, is the future of optimizing health and wellness.”

Find out how your body actually handles carbs

Low-carb works for some people and backfires for others. In the PREDICT-1 trial, genetics accounted for nearly half of the variation in how much blood sugar rose two hours after a meal. Our CLIA-certified test scores your carbohydrate response across multiple validated SNPs, matches you to one of 20 diet types, and turns it into a plan: the carbs that suit you, the ones to limit, and a two-week meal plan built around them.

Frequently asked questions

MTHFR gene testing isn't recommended by all experts. However, in conjunction with several other SNPs, MTHFR mutations can increase the risk for elevated homocysteine and play a key role in the DNA methylation process. Further, MTHFR activity affects folate metabolism and how an individual will respond to dietary folic acid. The T allele of MTHFR C677T is an important marker for the Black Community, in particular, to test for, as even one copy has been shown to increase heart attack risk meaningfully.

The MTHFR enzyme metabolizes dietary folate and folic acid into the active form of folate required for synthesizing DNA, RNA and other amino acids. And we need these bioactive nutrients to support cell maintenance and the production of new, healthy cells.

The one-carbon pathway also involves the methionine cycle, which converts homocysteine into methionine. MTHF, as produced by the enzyme MTHFR, as mentioned above, is then used by the enzyme methionine synthase as a methyl donor to convert homocysteine into methionine. When MTHF loses its methyl group, tetrahydrofolate (THF) is formed. THF re-enters the one-carbon cycle and may acquire another methyl group as the process continues.

These pathways are collectively referred to as the methylation cycle, the major activity of which is the transfer of methyl groups between molecules.

We don't sell supplements and have been vocal about potential side effects that can arise when people take methylfolate without working with a physician to arrive at a targeted dose. Having said that, knowing your MTHFR status can be valuable because of the important role getting adequate folate plays in health. In particular, those who carry heterozygous mutations for MTHFR C677T may want to avoid synthetic folic acid and focus instead on natural sources of folate and, when called for a methylated B vitamin.

This report is available with the Methylation Bundle (Health Intelligence), alongside the core reports included with your Gene Food DNA test. Current bundle pricing is shown above.

Like all our tests, the MTHFR report is a simple cheek swab test. A self-addressed return envelope is included with the test kit, as are detailed instructions for taking the test. The swab sample is sent to our CLIA-certified laboratory in Houston, where the sequencing occurs.
