Methylation and Homocysteine Report

Learn your genetic predispositions for the methylation pathway

DNA methylation is a complex biochemical process that has been in the news lately, with health influencers like Gary Brecka publicizing the role methylation plays in health. Abnormal DNA methylation related to chronic stress has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and nutrients like folate play a role in the proper functioning of this important pathway. The Gene Food methylation panel looks at several key genetic markers involved in the methylation process so users can get a clear picture of how this pathway functions.

A note from our founder

Methylation and MTHFR are where I got started with nutrigenomics almost a decade ago. It's a fascinating topic, and a widely misunderstood one. We've been reporting on it since 2018, and we've run methylation panels for thousands of customers since.

If you're comparing options, I think our testing holds up well against the alternatives. You also get our proprietary Gene Food diet type and AI assistant, which no one else offers.

We'd be honored to have you in the community.

Carbs are GOOD
★★★★★

“Once I went back to carbs (based on the Okinawa diet) and quit the whole 30/paleo diet as well as any attempts at Keto or low-carb, my weight stopped rising, and actually started to go down (and I didn’t even follow the Okinawa diet very strictly, and did no caloric restriction)!”

Best health decision of my adult life
★★★★★

“Acquiring a custom nutrition plan from Gene Food was the single best health decision of my adult life. I frequent the Gene Food blog & the Gene Food podcast. John O’Connor and Dr. Aaron Gardner are focused on providing individuals with the very best science based information today. I believe their individualized approach, not the “one size fits all” seen frequently, is the future of optimizing health and wellness.”

Frequently asked questions

The methylation test is updated regularly as our research team evaluates new SNPs. The panel currently looks at 15 SNPs and the following genes: AHCY, CBS, COMT, DPEP1, MTR, MTRR, MTHFR, SLC19A1

Methylation is needed to create DNA and RNA and regulate gene expression, it literally turns on and off genes. A disrupted DNA methylation pathway can cause inflammation and has been linked to various diseases, including cancer, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. Understanding DNA methylation can provide insights into disease mechanisms and how to craft a personalized approach to health and nutrition.

In our view, understanding methylation status from a genetic perspective is most helpful as a tool for personalizing cardiovascular health. Some individuals who “undermethylate” may benefit from nutritional support, and certain supplements, like methylfolate.

From a genetic standpoint, yes. The one-carbon pathway is a universal pathway required for the synthesis of nucleic acids and for the remethylation of homocysteine. Folate is a vital nutrient in the one-carbon pathway as it facilitates the transport of methyl groups needed for DNA methylation and homocysteine remethylation. High levels of homocysteine have long been linked to the development of heart disease and cognitive impairment. There’s now a general acceptance that it’s important to keep homocysteine levels in check. And, as homocysteine plays a role in DNA methylation, factors affecting methylation processes can also affect homocysteine status.

The methylation test is included in the Health Intelligence premium tier, which also includes the Gene Food diet type and new health reports published each month. We test for 15 SNPs shown to impact DNA methylation so users get a comprehensive picture of their status for this important pathway.

Like all our tests, the DNA methylation test is a simple cheek swab test. A self-addressed return envelope is included with the test kit, as are detailed instructions for taking the test. The swab sample is sent to our CLIA-certified laboratory in Houston, where the sequencing occurs.
