APOE report

Learn your APOE status

The Gene Food APOE test classifies by APOE type and uses the information to help craft a personalized diet type using our proprietary scoring algorithm. Apolipoprotein E (APOE) transports lipoproteins, vitamins, and cholesterol, particularly in the brain, and is encoded by the APOE gene. There are three major forms of APOE. The type of APOE expressed is controlled by two separate SNPs in the APOE gene, rs7412 or C526CT and rs429358 or T388C. Therefore, the two SNPs should be read together to identify which type of APOE gene you carry: APOE2, APOE3, or APOE4. Gene Food testing also identifies the KLOTHO genotype, a marker that can mitigate risk, even for APOE4 carriers.

Carbs are GOOD
★★★★★

“Once I went back to carbs (based on the Okinawa diet) and quit the whole 30/paleo diet as well as any attempts at Keto or low-carb, my weight stopped rising, and actually started to go down (and I didn’t even follow the Okinawa diet very strictly, and did no caloric restriction)!”

Best health decision of my adult life
★★★★★

“Acquiring a custom nutrition plan from Gene Food was the single best health decision of my adult life. I frequent the Gene Food blog & the Gene Food podcast. John O’Connor and Dr. Aaron Gardner are focused on providing individuals with the very best science based information today. I believe their individualized approach, not the “one size fits all” seen frequently, is the future of optimizing health and wellness.”

Find out how your body actually handles carbs

Low-carb works for some people and backfires for others. In the PREDICT-1 trial, genetics accounted for nearly half of the variation in how much blood sugar rose two hours after a meal. Our CLIA-certified test scores your carbohydrate response across multiple validated SNPs, matches you to one of 20 diet types, and turns it into a plan: the carbs that suit you, the ones to limit, and a two-week meal plan built around them.

Frequently asked questions

The Gene Food APOE classifier evaluates rs7412 or C526CT and rs429358 or T388C. These two markers allow us to identify ApoE4, or ApoE3, and ApoE2 genotypes.

Yes, we report on the Klotho-VS genotype at Gene Food as part of our Health Intelligence premium tier.

People who carry at least one Klotho-VS allele (~25% of the population) have increased levels of the soluble form of Klotho that may confer neuroprotection through diverse mechanisms. This allele has been shown to protect against aging-associated phenotypes and cognitive decline. Most importantly, it was found to reduce the effects of the deleterious ApoE allele (e4) on the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Yes, APOE factors into our core scoring algorithm and is part of the basic plan. Carriers of ApoE4 are usually scored into lower fat diets due to the evidence that ApoE4 genotypes tend to see elevated APOB and LDL-C on high-fat diets due to a hyper-synthetic response.

APOE ε4 carriers tend to have elevated LDL cholesterol levels when consuming diets high in saturated fats, increasing cardiovascular risk and long term health consequences. For those without Alzheimer’s, elevated LDL cholesterol and APOE-ε4 also infer an increased risk for developing dementia, so know your numbers. A poor lipid profile is also a marker for developing Alzheimer’s. Understanding the way APOE status impacts fat metabolism in particular can help individuals craft a diet that takes into account their propensity towards elevated lipids.
